THE Venice film festival opened yesterday with jury president Quentin Tarantino, who must ultimately decide who walks away with the coveted Golden Lion award at the closing ceremony on September 11, saying his time on the island would be more work than play.

"There’s a lot of really exciting movies, exciting directors. It’s a fantastic line-up," he said. "I’m keen with anticipation. I’ve been on a few juries and I love it. It’s a joy to me. But it’s work. We’re not here for vacation."

The opening movie was "Black Swan," starring Natalie Portman as a ballet dancer in New York whose position is threatened when a beautiful newcomer arrives.

Festival director Marco Mueller has opted for youth in his choice of directors of the 23 competition films, and he will also hope the presence of Hollywood mavericks can make up for the expected shortage of A-list celebrities this year.

Venice, the world’s oldest film festival and one of its most prestigious, sees the premiere of "Essential Killing," in which actor and painter Vincent Gallo stars as an Afghan Taliban fighter who is captured but escapes on his way to a secret detention centre in Europe.

The subject matter, and Gallo’s reputation as an uncompromising, eccentric artist, make it one of the more eagerly anticipated movies in competition.

The rebound in sales is good news for car manufacturers worldwide are turning to China to drive sales of lower global demand. Sales this year should increase by more than 20 percent, even before an impressive 45 per cent in 2009.

The center, a set of monthly data from multiple sources on the Chinese auto sales and production, and estimated sales in August, from January to 9.5 million vehicles, nearly 32 percent during the same period of 2009.

Sales of energy-saving vehicles rose 32 percent to 129,600, the center said in a report posted on its website.

Demand was also relatively strong for imported vehicles, as Japanese and European auto makers increasingly focus on serving the market for smaller, affordable cars, the center’s Chairman Zhao Hang said, without giving specific figures.

A recent rise in the value of China’s currency has also stimulated sales of imported cars. "That makes things cheaper,The exhibition will also debut its first Malaysia International Stationery Expo as demand for embossed stationery embossed with company logo is increasing." Zhao said.

‘Hostile elements’ threatening Iraq

1 September 2010

THE United States yesterday moved into the final phase of its military involvement in Iraq, with administration officials saying the war was ending even as the new commander of the remaining 50,000 troops warned of the ongoing threat from "hostile elements."

The transfer of authority came a day after President Barack Obama announced the shift from combat operations to preparing Iraqi forces to assume responsibility for their own security. Obama made clear in Tuesday’s speech that this was no victory celebration.

A six-month stalemate over forming a new Iraqi government has raised concerns about the country’s stability and questions over whether the leadership can cope with a diminished but still dangerous insurgency.

Newly promoted Army General Lloyd Austin also maintained a somber tone as he took the reins of the some 50,000 American troops who remain in Iraq, with a deadline for a full withdrawal by the end of next year.

He noted "hostile enemies" continue to threaten Iraq and pledged that "our national commitment to Iraq will not change."

"Although challenges remain, we will face these challenges together," Austin said during the ceremony at the opulent al-Faw palace of ousted dictator Saddam Hussein.

"This period in Iraq’s history will probably be remembered for sacrifice, resilience and change," Odierno said. "However, I remember it as a time in which the Iraqi people stood up against tyranny, terrorism and extremism, and decided to determine their own destiny as a people and as a democratic state."

Vice President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen presided over the ceremony, which was held at the main US military headquarters on the southwestern outskirts of Baghdad.

Gates, visiting American troops in the Iraqi city of Ramadi yesterday, said history will judge whether the fight was worth it for the US.,Fashion boots

"The problem with this war, I think,Festival staff members have also examined expenditures and have taken action, from not hiring staff children stationery to not reordering for many Americans, is that the premise on which we justified going to war turned out not to be valid," he said. Claiming that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction, then-President George W. Bush ordered the invasion with approval of a Congress still reeling from the 9/11 attacks. Bush’s claims were based on faulty intelligence, and the weapons were never found.

China has launched similar nationwide

1 September 2010

China has launched similar nationwide crackdowns in 1989, 1995 and last year.

An official circular titled "Directions on Deepening the Crackdown of Small Exchequers" warned that officials’ attempts to hide illicit accounts or spend funds "in a blitz" will lead to "harsh punishment."

CHINA is making a new attempt to stamp out illicit accounts known as "little coffers" – money that officials skim from public funds.

The latest clampdown on the long-standing practice has fingered several thousand officials nationwide since April. Some 322 of them were referred to judicial departments.

"The illegal phenomenon has resulted in inaccuracy in accounting, disturbance in market order,Safely transport your 17 laptop messenger bag in any briefcase, messenger bag or backpack. ‘No smoking’ law comes into effect in Guangzhou

1 September 2010

A local smoking-control law came into effect Wednesday in Guangzhou, the capital of south China’s Guangdong Province.

The law covers all of Guangzhou City. There, smoking in most public places, like offices, conference rooms, halls and elevators, is strictly prohibited.

Places of business larger than 150 square meters or having more than 75 seats may designate an area for smokers.

Those who break the law will be fined 50 yuan (about 7.35 U.S.,Australian ugg boots, dollars) and businesses not meeting their obligations will be fined up to 30,000 yuan.

However, some doubt the law is enforceable.

"A quick smoke can take less than one minute. How can an enforcement agency come in such little time?" a different pedestrian asked a Xinhua reporter.Festival staff members have also examined expenditures and have taken action, from not hiring staff children stationery to not reordering

Hu Angang, an economics professor at Tsinghua University, said weak smoking-control in China means measurable goals should be included in the twelfth national development plan.

"Putting goals into the national plan shows great political will from state leaders. So the whole of society, especially local governments, will implement it without hesitation. The plan is a binding document for the government," said Hu.

Shanghai began implementing a regulation to ban smoking in 12 types of public places March 1 in an effort to have a smoke-free World Expo.

Shanghai declined a 200-million-yuan sponsorship deal for the 2010 World Expo from a tobacco company in July 2009.

One of the world’s largest tobacco producing and consuming nations, China manufactures about 100 billion packets of cigarettes each year.

It has a smoking population of 350 million, about one third of the world’s total smoking population.

Guangdong prepares for storms’ fury

1 September 2010

The tranquility in the air before tropical storm Lionrock’s possible landing on Wednesday night in Guangzhou calmed no one in eastern Guangdong province.

Clouds gather above Taiwan’s Hualien city as tropical storm Lionrock approaches, September 1, 2010.

Huang Shidong, 53, a villager of Jingzhou township in Chaozhou city, was among 30,000 local fishermen who docked their 1,500 boats for the approaching storm.

The eastern corner of the province, where 70 percent of the local income is derived from the fishing industry, is most likely to feel the first strike of the tropical storm, which on Tuesday joined forces with another tropical storm, Namtheun, as well as a typhoon, Kompasu, to threaten South and East China.

Chaozhou city authorities raised their warning for Lionrock to Level 2 on Wednesday, as local officials readied the city for any post-typhoon disaster efforts. The three designer laptop bag styles include a large Tote bag with a quilted laptop section and multiple pockets for girly stuff

Huang, who has fished for 40 years, told China Daily that tropical low pressure systems like those in this current season are the "most evil monsters" for the fishermen working on the South China Sea.

"The power of typhoons in early autumn is terrible on the sea," Huang said. Here’s one for the guys–the Expand-It bags for laptop Messenger bag by BBP Bags. "It can be so strong that it easily devours boats."

The director of Chaozhou city’s water affairs bureau, Zhang Muguang, said one of the biggest concerns for the city is a large amount of rainfall. He added that the typhoon that slammed into the region in 2006 wiped out one-eighth of its annual income.

"Floods and landslides are in the cards following big rains," said Zhang.

Local authorities on Wednesday said tropical storm Lionrock would bring heavy rains and strong gales to Southeast China’s coastal areas, closely following tropical storm Namtheun, which hit East China’s Fujian province on Tuesday night.

According to the Guangdong provincial observatory, tropical storm Lionrock had weakened but was moving quicker at 10 pm on Tuesday, heading toward the coastal cities of Guangdong and Fujian provinces.

Moving at a speed of 83 kilometers per hour, Lionrock is expected to make landfall in the area from Guangdong’s Shanwei city to Fujian’s Xiamen city, late Wednesday or early Thursday, and might strengthen before landing, said Lin Liangxun, forecaster of the observatory.custom engraved stationery; writing instruments; eyewear; leather goods; and, fashion accessories

Lionrock will bring heavy rain to the area from Tuesday to Thursday.

Tropical storm Namtheun made landfall in Hui’an county in Fujian at 11:50 pm on Tuesday and was expected to weaken early Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile Typhoon Kompasu is approaching the west sea area of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and is expected to travel at a speed of 25 to 30 kilometers per hour for the next 24 hours, Lin said.

Lionrock lashed Taiwan on Wednesday on its way to the Chinese mainland, bringing heavy rains and howling winds to areas battered by a deadly typhoon just over a year ago as a stronger front churned toward the Korean peninsula.

In Taiwan, authorities have cancelled classes, called off work and set up evacuation space for 19,000 people.

Swedish prosecutor reopens probe into WikiLeaks fo

1 September 2010

A SENIOR Swedish prosecutor reopened a rape investigation against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange yesterday, the latest twist to a puzzling case in which prosecutors of different ranks have overruled each other.

Assange has denied the allegations and suggested they are part of a smear campaign by opponents of WikiLeaks – an online whistle-blower that has angered Washington by publishing thousands of leaked documents about United States military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The case was dismissed last week by Eva Finne,I continued my journey past the old “10th Street High School,” admiring how my former bags for school district has taken gentle care of my old “middle school. chief prosecutor in Stockholm, who overruled a lower-ranked prosecutor and said there was no reason to suspect that Assange, an Australian citizen, had raped a Swedish woman who had reported him to police. The woman’s lawyer appealed the decision. Director of Public Prosecution Marianne Ny decided to reopen the case yesterday, saying new information had come in on Tuesday.

"We went through all the case material again, including what came in, and that’s when I made my decision," Ny told reporters.

She declined to say what new information she had received or whether Assange, who was questioned by investigators on Monday, would be arrested. An arrest warrant issued on August 20 was withdrawn within 24 hours amid the back-and-forth between prosecutors.

Ny said it was "not entirely uncommon" that such reversals take place in Sweden, in particular regarding allegations of sex crimes. The Barcelona comes in medium and large sizes, for holding 15-inch and 17 inch laptop bags, respectively

Ny also decided that another complaint against Assange should be investigated on suspicion of "sexual coercion and sexual molestation." That overruled a previous decision to only investigate the case as "molestation," which is not a sex offense under Swedish law.

Investigators have not released details about either case, though a police report shows both women had met Assange in connection with a seminar he gave in Stockholm on August 14.,dior bags cheap, The report shows the women filed their complaints together six days later.

Wikileaks made headlines around the world on July 25 when it released tens of thousands of pages of secret US documents about Afghanistan.

Assange is seeking legal protection for WikiLeaks in Sweden, one of the countries where the group says it has servers. The Swedish Migration Board has confirmed that Assange has applied for a work and residence permit.

Assange did not immediately respond to the rape case being reopened, and his defense lawyer Leif Silbersky didn’t answer calls seeking comment.

Claes Borgstrom, a lawyer who represents both women, welcomed the decision.

WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson said the group backs Assange. "We hope that he will clear his name and meanwhile the WikiLeaks organization is going on with its endeavors," Hrafnsson said.

WikiLeaks says it intends to publish 15,000 more Afghan war documents in coming weeks, a disclosure US officials say could endanger innocent people or confidential informants.
